Young Guns dominate in windy conditions at Sorrento

The opening stop of the 2020 Alcohol. Think Again Beach Tour has concluded with a dominant performance in the men’s competition from Maksim Bacovic and Greg Hunt. While Shelby Maher and Jasmine Serra clinched the women’s AAA competition at Sorrento Beach in a closely contested Grand Final.

The men’s AAA Grand Final saw Tom Dempsey and Chris Adams face an in-form Bacovic and Hunt. Dempsey and Adams bested the second seed to proceed to the final and were able to collect a few points in windy conditions, however, there was no denying Bacovic and Hunt’s dominance. Dempsey and Adams ultimately had to settle for silver, with Bacovic and Hunt collecting the win in two sets, 21-13 and 21 – 12.

“It was good to play well and get the win at Sorrento, especially given the windy conditions. We still have a few things to work on before the upcoming WA Open.” said Hunt.

While in the AAA Women’s Grand, Maher and Serra were up against Taleah Atthowe and Jana Orszaghova. Atthowe and Orszaghova had to battle hard to regain ground after dropping the first set 21-7 and were able to push Maher and Serra over the following two sets. While Maher and Serra dropped the second set, the young duo recomposed themselves for a tough third set and clinched the top division win in three sets, 21-7, 18-21, 16-14.

In the women’s AA competition, High School students Elizabeth Alchin and Caitlin Whincup bested Sandrine Bornand and Laura Mocca in two sets, 15-10 and 15-12.
