Volleyball WA announce WAVL fixtures

Volleyball WA (VWA) is pleased to announce the fixtures for the new WA Volleyball League (WAVL) 2019 season.

In a landmark year for the competition, WAVL 2019 will implement recommendations sourced from the 2018 WAVL review and will see VWA and the Board role out their three year vision to bring the game to the forefront of sport in WA

A major part of the roll out will be the competition’s new three tier structure. The competition will now be divided into the WAVL State League, WAVL State League Reserves and the WAVL Divisions.

The elite level of the WA competition will see six clubs compete in the WAVL State League season. One-year WAVL State League licences have been awarded to Balcatta, ECU Chequers, Northern Stars, Reds Volleyball Club, Rossmoyne and UWA with all Club’s entering at least six teams throughout the WAVL League. Southern Cross and Fremantle were given a one-year exemption by the VWA Board to enter teams in the WAVL State League Reserve competition alongside the six State League clubs.

VWA Chief Executive Officer Robyn Kuhl was confident the new structure would help strengthen the game’s future.

“The 2019 WAVL season is the culmination of years of work and development. The evolution of indoor volleyball in WA is critical in ensuring the sport stays relevant in the WA sporting market.” Kuhl said.

“We encourage the clubs to utilise this opportunity to innovate and grow the sport they are so passionate about. I would implore everyone to talk with their club committee members and presidents to see how they can be a part of this landmark year.”

The season will kick off on May 19 across three core locations, north (either Warwick Stadium or ECU Joondalup), central (Loftus Centre) or south (ARC Cockburn). While most games will be held at these three locations, State League clubs will also be hosting two home game fixtures per year.

The regular season will run from May 19, with the finals series set to begin on September 8 and the Grand Final to be held on September 22 at Warwick Stadium.
