Philippines Sweep WA

The PLDT Philippine women have proved too strong for WA’s top team. The PLDT women concluded their six-day volleyball tour of WA on Friday the 7th of June with a finale against the Volleyball WA Steel women.

PLDT came into the game with three consecutive wins after playing some of WA’s top WAVL State League women’s teams. Providing tough competition across three nights of volleyball action the Reds, Northern Stars and Rossmoyne Volleyball Clubs were all bested by the international team.

After traveling to Belmont, Warwick and Mandurah, the PLDT arrived at Bendat Basketball Centre for their last stop. Playing in front of more than 200 Philippine and WA volleyball fans, the teams pushed hard for the win and entertained the lively supporters.

Fighting it out over three tight sets with some outstanding rallies on both ends, the PLDT team pulled away with the win, naming them the undefeated champions of their inaugural WA tour.

‘I thought we played well given we’ve only had a handful of training sessions since the end of last season. The Filipino’s play at a different speed than we’ve experienced so far in Australia. They’re fast, strong and most of all consistent.’ Said 2018 WA Steel Vice Captain Jackie Tamburri.

‘They just kept coming at us and you rarely saw them make mistakes. It really challenged our defence and showed us a level of play that we should aspire to reach in the coming years. Despite the loss it was a fun match and great experience for the team.’

Volleyball WA would like to thank all the teams, clubs, schools, organisations, referees, staff and supporters who made the first international tour possible in WA. We would like to specifically acknowledge Marino Salinos from MS 3 Green who organised all four of the events.
