CATS BOOK DOUBLE-HEADER FOR GRAND FINALS

Balcatta teams win big in Superleague 1 on a day of thrillers!

Another thrilling day of tightly-fought matches provided a spectacle down the divisions for spectators of the WAVL preliminary finals, while the Superleague 1 division saw a sea of red with Balcatta taking out both matches against ECU (Women) and Northern Stars (Men). Both matches were hard fought in the opening sets, with the Stars Men taking the second in their match. But it was the Cats who came home strong, with Stars unable to find the answers in the final two sets and ECU’s Women fighting hard and playing good volleyball but unable to take crucial points. Women; Balcatta 3-0 ECU, Men; Balcatta 3-1 Northern Stars. Both Balcatta teams will meet UWA for the premiership on Friday night.

In Superleague 2  MBC Waves Men’s impressive run at the premiership was halted by a resourceful and adaptive Northern Stars team. The Mandurah squad were unable to force a fifth set, going down 26-24. The women’s match saw a spectacular match between ECU and Southern Cross, with Chequers eventually taking the fifth set 15-8.

Elsewhere in the competition, it was Southern Cross who took out the Superleague 3 matches with the Men’s squad fighting out a match for the ages against Northern Stars. It took a full five sets of smart hitting and strong blocking for Southern Cross to complete their unbeaten run for the year against the Stars. The girls in green also came through with a win, matching UWA for defensive effort and closing the match in four sets.

Superleague Reserve and Open League saw UWA teams competing in all four matches, with a 2-2 record resulting. In open league Women, St Hilda’s completed an impressive 25-14, 25-14 win over Northern Stars to book their place in the final.
