The 2023-2024 Beach Volleyball season has started off strong with 200 teams competing across three Alcohol. Think Again Beach Tour events prior to the Christmas break.
The Men’s Elite Division has seen six different athletes at the top of the podium, with a different team winning gold at each of the three events:
Round 1 – Ky Landers/ Jonathan Hunt
Round 2 – Daniel Piggott / Jed Walker
Round 3 – Jonathan Hague / Ben O’Dea
We also welcomed back two WA athletes from the National Developing Beach Volleyroos Program last weekend, Joshua Howat and Kaia Clarkin who competed in Round 3 at Sorrento Beach.
There have been familiar faces in the Semi Finals and Grand Finals for the Women’s Elite Division, but so far Jasmine Serra and Tessa Browne sit at the top after winning Rounds 1 & 2 this year. Kyla Sanchez and Keete Kreen were the first to challenge the Number 1 seeds last weekend at Sorrento and claim gold for Round 3. The pair have individually finished in the top 4 each round this season, along with Jana Orszaghova and Georgia Diaz. Newcomers to the top 4 last weekend were longstanding teammates Beth Morris and Tara Banks, who narrowly missed out on the Grand Final by just 3 points in the 3rd set.
The tour will recommence on 13-14 January 2024 for an exciting stop at the Volleyball WA Inner City Beach Courts, which will be a licensed event with drinks available for purchase so spectators and teams can hang around after they finish their games, with games being played into the night under the lights.
VWA is also excited to be returning to Bunbury on the Australia Day long weekend as one of two Regional stops on the tour. The round on Labour Day long weekend is still to be confirmed pending discussions with local councils and shires.
The showcase event will be the hotly contested WA State Open on 10-11 February, where beach volleyball will take over Scarborough Beach for the weekend and spectators will get to witness the State’s top athletes compete for bragging rights and prize money.
